Renault has revealed its plans to launch its first Alpine model, a two-seat sports car, in 2016 which will be followed by a series of Alpine vehicles. The brand-new Alpine model is to be named the AS1 – Alpine Sport 1 and is a lightweight mid-engine sports car boasting a turbocharged four-cylinder power.
Earlier, the sports car was expected to be developed in 2012 by Renault and Caterham Cars collaboratively, but due to difference in opinions the two brands parted ways and Renault took over the project.
Renault’s executive vice president, Bruno Ancelin said at the Geneva Motor show that the company was certain it will not limit their brand’s production to one single model and will consider complementary models in their line-up. He also suggested that a hybrid version may well be on the horizon.
The company has still not settled on the car’s technology, engine, body style, and whether the line-up will only feature sports cars or include SUVs as well.
