Dodge’s redesigned Challenger has earned a five-star overall crashworthiness rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The agency awarded the coupe four stars for frontal-crash protection, five stars for side-impact crashworthiness and four stars for rollover prevention, with an 11.1-percent chance of flipping the car in a theoretical evasive maneuver and over correction.
Aside from the high marks in actual crash tests, the 2015 Challenger has also been praised for adding an optional forward-collision warning system. It does not offer the NHTSA’s other recommended safety features, however, including rearview video and lane-departure warning.
“The 2015 Challenger checks all the boxes,” says FCA safety head Scott Kunselman. “It affords premium safety and security in a stylish package that delivers a sporty driving experience.”
The 2015 model appears to resolve a safety concern that had been raised with its predecessor. The NHTSA also gave the 2014 model a five-star rating, but noted that the driver door unlatched in the side impact test.
