Volkswagen’s GTI Roadster concept car will make its North American debut at the Los Angeles International Auto Show next week. The GTI Roadster, Vision Gran Turismo is based on a CGI concept created to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Gran Turismo video game franchise. For that reason, it foregoes any pretense of family-car practicality or production feasibility. The GTI Roadster concept sports racing seats with five-point harnesses for the driver and passenger (despite its Golf roots, it has no rear seat at all), a very aggressively chopped roofline and a massive rear wing.
Under the hood is a twin-turbocharged, 3.0-liter FSI engine producing 503 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque, and power goes to the ground via a seven-speed DSG transmission and 4MOTION all-wheel-drive. VW claims it weighs only 3,133 lbs and will do 0-60 in 3.5 seconds on the way to a top speed of 192 mph.
Volkswagen originally showed the GTI Roadster at the annual Wörthersee festival in Austria. The GTI Roadster, Vision Gran Turismo is available for download to owners of Gran Turismo 6 for the PlayStation 3 gaming console.
