Volvo announced on Friday that it sold out its limited run of XC90 First Edition models in just 47 hours. Volvo will produce 1,927 units of the First Edition XC90 to commemorate the company’s first year of business.
To kick off sales of the all-new 2015 XC90, Volvo opened online sales for the First Edition model at 10am on Wednesday. Within the first hour most of the 1,927 units were already spoken for, with Volvo taking an average of 7 orders per minute.
The final few units were sold early Friday morning.
“We are very pleased, but not really surprised,” said Alain Visser, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Sales and Customer Service of Volvo Car Group. “The huge interest in the XC90 escalated to astronomical levels after the world premiere last week.”
Set to greet the public for the first time at the upcoming Paris Motor Show, the XC90 First Edition includes an Onyx Black exterior, 21-inch wheels, Amber leather, unique badging and a numbered plaque. Buyers will be able to selected from a 320 horsepower gas engine or a diesel mill making 225 horsepower. Both engines are backed by an eight-speed automatic transmission.
In the U.S., the 2015 XC90 First Edition carries a base price of $65,900. Volvo says the limited edition crossover “will be a collectors item in the future,” but we doubt many of the first buyers are investors.
