A member of Saudi Shoura Council has proposed to increase the minimum driving age from 18 years to 20 years, while for heavy vehicles it must be 23 years. It is also suggested that driving under the effect of drugs must also be declared as illegal.
Government is concerned about the increasing ratio of fatal accidents across Saudi Arabia, and is acting stringently to bring it down. Traffic Department of the kingdom has announced that parents allowing their young children to drive will also be penalized. The department will deploy undercover patrol police to monitor and report traffic violations and accidents caused by young drivers.
Saudi Arabia will remain the only country not issuing drivers’ license to women, despite their increasing protest. The council is looking to bring major reforms in the current traffic laws.
