Nissan’s European test center has teamed up with UltraTech International Inc. to create what the automaker calls the world’s first “self-cleaning” car. The test car, a Nissan Note, uses UltraTech’s Ultra-Ever Dry paint that repels water and oils.

According to Nissan, UltraTech’s clean paint technology works by “creating a protective layer of air between the paint and environment,” which prevents any kind of dirt or mud from sticking to the Note’s body work. The Note is the first application of the paint technology in the automotive world.

“The Nissan Note has been carefully engineered to take the stress out of customer driving and Nissan’s engineers are constantly thinking of new ways to make families’ lives easier,” said Geraldine Ingham, Chief Marketing Manager for Nissan Note. “We are committed to addressing everyday problems our customers face and will always consider testing exciting, cutting edge technology like this incredible coating application.”

Nissan says the Ultra-Ever Dry paint has been working as advertised, but the company doesn’t have any current plans to use the paint on a regular production vehicle. However, Nissan is exploring the paint as an aftermarket option.
