Chevrolet has confirmed plans to offer an eight-speed automatic transmission in the 2015 Corvette Stingray.
Known as the 8L90, the new gearbox is based on the same eight-sped automatic that will be available for the supercharged 2015 Corvette Z06, however the clutch and torque converter specs have been reworked to match the Stingray’s naturally-aspirated 6.2-liter LT1 engine.
The company claims its new paddle-shift transmission delivers performance comparable to dual-clutch or semi-automatic systems available in many supercars, allegedly performing wide-open-throttle upshifts approximately eight-hundredths of a second faster than the dual-clutch gearbox in the Porsche 911.
“Corvette Stingray’s new eight-speed automatic delivers the comfort and drivability of a true automatic transmission, as well as lightning-fast shifts and the manual control that enhance the performance-driving experience,” said Bill Goodrich, GM’s assistant chief engineer for the new eight-speed auto.
Engineers suggest “creative packaging” has enabled the new gearbox to fit in the same space as the outgoing six-speed automatic, while aluminum and magnesium have reduced the weight by more than eight pounds.
Chevrolet suggests the new gear ratios and reduction in internal friction will help the Stingray improve fuel economy, however final EPA estimates have yet to be announced.
