Volkswagen is considering launching a station wagon version of the potent Golf R.

Based on the existing Golf Variant (known as the Jetta Sportwagen in the United States), the Golf R Variant will be powered by a 296-horsepower 2.0-liter TFSI four-cylinder engine sourced from the Audi A3 parts bin. Power will be sent to all four wheels via either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic unit and the latest evolution of Volkswagen’s 4 Motion all-wheel drive system.

The turbo four will send the Golf R Variant from zero to 100 kmph in about 5.5 seconds when bolted to the six-speed manual gearbox. A lowered suspension and upgraded brakes will keep the power in check.

The Golf R’s body kit will be carried over to the Variant essentially unchanged. Expect the wagon to boast a muscular look thanks to an aggressive front bumper, sharp LED lights on both ends, side skirts, a discreet trunk-mounted spoiler and quad exhaust pipes. Large alloy wheels mounted on low-profile tires will wrap up the look.

The wagon will offer a race-inspired cockpit with sport seats upholstered in Nappa leather, carbon fiber trim on the dashboard, aluminum pedals and a flat-bottomed three-spoke steering wheel. A 5.8-inch touch screen that runs the car’s infotainment system will be offered as an option.

If it is given the green light for production, the Golf R wagon could bow next October at the Paris Motor Show and go on sale across Europe early next year.
