A new report coming out of England sheds light on what to expect from the all-new fourth-generation Volkswagen Scirocco expected to debut in 2017 at the earliest.
As previously reported, the next Scirocco will return to the nameplate’s roots and lose the current model’s distinct shooting brake-like shape in favor of a more coupe-like silhouette. Volkswagen is debating whether to position the car as simply a sporty, two-door version of the Golf or to turn the dial up to 11 and market it as a standalone sports car similar in spirit to the Audi TT.
Inside, the next Scirocco will retain the current model’s four-seater configuration but it will gain a more generous cargo compartment accessible through a large hatch. Passengers will be able to fold the rear seats down when extra cargo capacity is needed.
Sharing its modular MQB platform with numerous members of the Volkswagen family, the next Scirocco will gain more powerful gasoline- and diesel-burning engines with outputs ranging from about 125 to 230 horsepower. The R-badged model is expected to break the 300-horsepower barrier, and a hardcore, stripped-down RS model could pack as much as 330 ponies.
Look for official information about Volkswagen’s next Scirocco to emerge in the months leading up to its public debut. Volkswagen is expected to finally cave in to public demand and offer the coupe on this side of the herring pond.
