A Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa has reportedly fetched more than $40 million in a private sale to an anonymous buyer in the UK. The transfer is said to be the country’s most expensive car purchase ever, edging past several other surviving Ferrari 250s that recently sold for tens of millions.
The 1957 model sold in the UK was reportedly the second prototype built, with a racing history that includes high-profile wins at Le Mans and other tracks, according to a SWNS report. Adding to the appeal, racing legends Phil Hill and Peter Collins were behind the wheel for several of the top finishes.
The car has been described as “unmolested,” in completely original condition, with a 3.0 liter V12 that reaches 300 horsepower.
“This Ferrari is without question one of the most important cars on the planet if not the most important because of its originality,” said seller Tom Hartley Jr.
A 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO sold for an astonishing $52 million late last year, establishing the current record for most expensive car in the world. A 1962 GTO sold for $35 million in 2012, while a 1967 Ferrari NART Spyder was purchased last year for $27.5 million.
