Abu Dhabi Police warned motorists who break the law that their vehicles will be locked up in a special pound on the Corniche opposite the Hilton hotel.

Police said drivers must not alter the original color of their vehicles, mark indecent inscriptions on the vehicles, overload the vehicle with passengers or over-tint their windows.

Passengers who spray silly string or paint, or lean out of a vehicle’s windows, will also not be tolerated.

Brig Gen Hussein Al Harethi, head of the Traffic and Patrols Directorate, said traffic authorities would coordinate patrols in areas that are known to attract impromptu National Day parades in Abu Dhabi city, Al Ain and Al Gharbia.

“Vehicles that might cause damage to public property, like pavements and landscaping, or obstruct traffic or be responsible for any other uncivil behaviour will be immediately impounded,” he said.

“The violating vehicles will later be moved to the main pounds where they will be held for a month, in addition to the imposition of a Dh2,000 fine and 12 black points against the offender.”

These regulations are meant to ensure that “this national occasion is celebrated in a civil manner, without violations and without the reckless behavior that might lead to lethal and serious accidents, troubling an otherwise festive mood”.
