Looking to cash in on the increasingly large police utility vehicle market, Dodge today unveiled a special fleet version of its Durango three-row SUV.

The Special Service Durango will be available to police and fire departments as well as general – think municipal – fleet buyers.

As in the consumer Durango, both 3.6-liter V6 and 5.7-liter HEMI V8 engines are on offer, both of which are newly mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox for 2014. Similarly, Dodge will offer the Special Service Durango in both rear and all-wheel-drive variants. For fleet use, the Special Service Durango adds uprated brakes, a heavy-duty battery, alternator and water pump, plus an engine oil cooler and aload.

The biggest changes come inside, where the Special Service Durango builds on the consumer model with a unique customizable rear cargo area. Dodge says that under-floor storage bins and side bins will be joined by a fleet-only headliner. Police-style modifications include a special dome lamp and wiring for a spotlight.

A handful of options will be on offer: A Skid Plate Group (for all-wheel-drive models), a backup camera, a trailer tow package, an engine block heater and Chrysler’s Uconnect Access Via Mobile system for enhanced connectivity.

Speaking of tech, the durango Special Service includes a 7-inch display located in the guage cluster plus Chrysler’s 5-inch Uconnect system in the center stack.

Dodge says that the Special Service Durango will be on the market by the end of the year.
