Renault has published the first official images of the Duster Detour concept that will greet the public for the first time at the Johannesburg International Motor Show in South Africa.

Based on the facelifted Dacia Duster SUV that debuted in Frankfurt last month, the Duster Détour adopts a rugged appearance inspired by the Dakar Rally and, interestingly, the movie Mad Max.  The SUV features an orange and flat gray two-tone paint job, plastic wheel arches, LED lighting on both ends, a more aggressive front bumper that incorporates a pair of fog lights and bespoke 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped by high-profile tires.  Spot lights mounted on the roof and a raised ground clearance finish off the tough look.

Renault has not announced if the show car has gained interior or mechanical upgrades.  In South Africa, the Duster is only available with a 1.6-liter gas-burning four-cylinder or a 1.5-liter turbodiesel four-banger.

The concept’s purpose remains an enigma.  Although pure speculation at this point, it could hint at a limited-edition model similar to the Europe-only Duster Adventure aimed at the South African market, or it could announce the Renault’s entry into the grueling Dakar rally that will kick off on January 5th, 2014, in Rosario, Argentina.
