Lamborghini’s chief executive officer fully expects Volkswagen, the Italian automaker’s corporate parent, to green light a production version of the Urus SUV concept.
Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini CEO, revealed to The Detroit News last week that he fully expects VW to give the Urus the production nod.
“We’re working on it and it will come, which will be good for the brand,” Winkelmann said in reference to the SUV. “We’re going low profile now. I can’t tell you much on details now, but when we get close to the launch, we will have more.”
Introduced in concept form in 2012, the Urus would be Lamborghini’s first utility model since the LM002 went out of production in 1993. Although details remain scarce, the Urus is expected to ride on the same MLB platform that will underpin the next Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne. Power could come from a V10 engine.
Tentatively scheduled to launch in 2016 or 2017, the Urus will compete with other high-buck performance SUVs like Maserati’s Levante and Land Rover’s upcoming R line of Range Rover models.
