Milan-based Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera has teamed up with Alfa Romeo to produce a limited run of retro-styled Disco Volante coupes.

Presented as a concept car at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show and as a production vehicle a year later, the Disco Volante was initially designed to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Alfa Romeo C52, a very rare experimental two-seater.  The C52’s sleek and futuristic silhouette earned it the nickname Disco Volante, which means “flying saucer” in Italian.

The 21st century Disco Volante is powered by the same Maserati-sourced 4.7-liter V8 engine found in the engine bay of the Alfa Romeo 8C.  Linked to a six-speed automatic transmission controlled by shift paddles, the mill sends 444 horsepower and 345 lb-ft. of torque to the rear wheels, enough to propel the coupe from zero to 62 mph in 4.2 seconds.

The concept’s overall silhouette is heavily inspired by the original Disco Volante and it boasts a drag coefficient of just 0.25.  It is built out of hand-hammered aluminum and carbon fiber in order to keep the weight as low as possible.

Customers who want to add a Disco Volante to their collection must send an Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione to Superleggera’s workshop in Italy and wait about six months.  How much the conversion costs and how many examples will be built is not known.
