Mercedes-Benz is testing the waters for a new spec series with a racing version of its new Mercedes Benz CLA sedan. Dubbed the Mercedes Benz CLA 45 AMG Racing Series concept, the race car will make its world debut at next week’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

Mercedes has already launched a successful SLS AMG GT3 racing program, and now the Germany automaker is looking to offer that same kind of fun in a smaller package with the CLA 45 AMG Racing Series.

“The Mercedes Benz CLA 45 AMG Racing Series demonstrates our desire to further increase our commitment to customer motorsport. We are also seeking to offer interested customer teams a competitive, near-standard racing car with an excellent level of safety in the popular four-cylinder segment,” said Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. “The tremendous success of the SLS AMG GT3, which is now being raced by customer teams across five different continents, makes us highly confident.”

Based on the road-going Mercedes Benz CLA, the concept boasts a number of enhancements, including a racing suspension with a wider track, high-performance disc brakes, carbon fiber racing components and racing slicks.

The CLA 45 AMG Racing Series is motivated by a turbocharged four-cylinder, with technical specifications varying by race rules and race series. Mercedes says it could offer the CLA racing package with either front-wheel drive or permanent all-wheel drive.

If there is enough interest, we could see a version of the CLA 45 AMG Racing Series available for purchase within the next few years.
