General Motors has announced impressive fuel economy figures for its all new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray.
Despite relying on a 455 horsepower 6.2L V8 for motivation, the 2014 Corvette Stingray will offer an EPA-estimated 27.35 kmpg in the city and 46.67 kmpg on the highway.
Moreover, when switched to “Eco” mode, GM says the Corvette is capable of hitting 48.28 kmpg on the highway, matching the highway rating of the Chevy Malibu Turbo. The Corvette’s default “Tour” mode nets a lesser 45kmpg, explaining the EPA’s 46.67mpg overall highway rating.
All rating are for Corvette models equipped with a new seven-speed manual gearbox. GM will release fuel economy figures for automatic cars at a later date.
“The Corvette Stingray establishes the benchmark for modern performance cars by using technologies to deliver more performance and more miles per gallon,” said Tadge Juechter, executive chief engineer for the Corvette. “We expect more and more performance cars will follow Corvette’s example.”
GM is quick to point out that no other sports car on the market can match the Corvette’s combination of power and efficiency. For example, the 400 horsepower Porsche 911 Carrera S achieves just 43.45 kmpg on the highway while the slightly more powerful Jaguar F-Type S can only muster 37 kmpg.
The Porsche Cayman can hit 30mpg on the highway, but offers 180 fewer ponies than the Corvette.
