Meet The New Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ and CLA 45 S 4MATIC+

The German automaker introduced the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ and CLA 45 S 4MATIC+ at the Goodwood Festival of Speed along with their standard versions. Mercedes-AMG fully redesigned the range-topping versions of the A-Class and CLA-Class. According to Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Management Board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, “We have completely redesigned our “45” models – from the engine and transmission through the chassis, the elaborately constructed drivetrain to the body structure and of course the design itself – all with one goal: to raise vehicle dynamics and the sporty driving experience to a level previously unimaginable in the compact class. With the presentation of this, our most powerful and most dynamic compact sports car, we are also reinforcing the significance of this segment for our growth strategy.”

The super sports cars come with a distinctive styling featuring the AMG-specific radiator grille, distinct “shark nose”, smart headlamps, and flat bonnet.

The biggest highlight of the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ and CLA 45 S 4MATIC+ is the new turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which the automaker says is the world’s most powerful turbocharged four-cylinder created for series production. Made entirely with hands, the new engine offers more power (40 hp) and torque (25 Nm) compared to the previous unit. The engine produces 416 hp (310 kW) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) and is mated to an eight-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission and a 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system. The same engine in the base models churns out 382 horsepower (285 kilowatts) and 480 Newton-meters (354 pound-feet) of torque.

Talking about the performance figures, there is a slight difference between the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ and CLA 45 S 4MATIC+. The former can jump to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds while the latter is tenth of a second slower due to its higher weight.

What makes these supersport compact cars more appealing are six AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes including “Slippery”, “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sport +”, “Individual” and “RACE”. All these are tailored to render optimum driving experience in specific conditions. For instance, as the name suggests, the “Slippery” is perfect for slippery and icy road surface conditions. As you select “Comfort”, the car tweaks the suspension and steering response for a comfortable drive. If you are looking for a quicker reaction to the driver’s accelerator pedal input, shorter shift times, quicker downshifts and notably extra sensitive gearshifts, choose the “Sport” mode. The “Sport+” mode further improves its sporty characteristics.  If you are like to test its mettle on an enclosed racetrack, better select “Race” mode. The “Individual” driving mode allows you to set your preferences.

Besides these driving modes, these cars boast AMG DYNAMICS, which include “Basic”, “Advanced”, “Pro”, and “Master” for more agility with high stability.

Inside the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ and CLA 45 S 4MATIC+, we find MBUX infotainment system with three AMG display styles – “Classic”, “Sport” and “Supersport” for the instrument cluster. Furthermore, the AMG Performance steering wheel gives buyers multiple options.

Both the Mercedes-AMG A 45 S 4MATIC+ and CLA 45 S 4MATIC+ will hit the roads before the end of this year in select markets. Hopefully, these will land in the UAE soon. Pricing details are still unknown. However, we do know that the 2019 AMG A45 costs AED 249,000, while the 2019 AMG CLA45 4Matic starts at 238,900.
