Following its Vision 2020 Plan, Volvo would not only be making its cars safe but would also monitor the drivers’ behavior behind the wheel and let the vehicle take its decisions. It is like Volvo acts as a Big Brother to motorists, taking car safety to the next level.
CEO Hakan Samuelsson announced different changes in the safety plan including limiting the top speed of their cars to only 180 km/h. They also intend to install in-vehicle monitoring systems in their cars to observe drivers behavior, offer a “Care Key” and even are ready to reveal their forty years of crash data.
Samuelsson thinks of road safety differently. For instance, a 100 km/h speed limit on a road does not mean it is safe to drive at this speed. A lot depends on the conditions and this is where Volvo’s new system comes in. Their system would compute a top speed that a vehicle “could not pass”. The automaker does not plan to limit the acceleration though. The reason is they take it as a safety precaution when drivers need to overtake.
On the other hand, Samuelsson wants to limit speed on certain places like schools and hospitals. Motorists looking extreme speed might not like Volvo implementing these changes and they may distant themselves from the brand. However, the automaker is okay with it. They only want to sell to those who value car safety.
