Toyota is planning to invest $170 million in its Mississippi plant for the upcoming 12th generation Toyota Corolla sedan. The investment which is part of Toyota’s commitment to invest $10 billion dollars in the U.S in the next 5 years will create 400 new jobs. The investment will replace old production lines with the popular TNGA platform. Using the new platform, Toyota will cut down the time it takes to add upgrades to vehicles thus would become more efficient.
Presently, Toyota builds 165,000 Corolla’s at their Mississippi plant and it also plans to develop Corollas at its plant in Alabama. The plant in Alabama is shared by fellow Japanese automaker Mazda and is scheduled to open by 2021. The new plant will add approximately 150,000 more Corollas in a year to meet rising consumer demand.
The Toyota Corolla Hatchback will come out in 2019 for the US markets while the 12th generation Toyota Corolla sedan will take a little more time and may hit the roads as a 2020 model.
