The General Department of Traffic clarified the regulations and procedures for women driving in Saudi Arabia in a press conference held recently. The department in collaboration with the commanders of road security forces already has made preparations to perform their tasks when women start driving on the roads.

GDT answered the queries about the implementation and legal aspects of the decision to clear concerns related to women driving in Saudi Arabia.

According to GDT, Saudi Licenses could be used to replace valid driving licenses taken from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and those holding an international license would not be required to take a driving test.

Additionally, foreign females who travel to Saudi Arabia could use their recognized valid driving licenses for a year in the Arab country. The minimum age for obtaining a driving license for a motorcycle or private vehicle is 18 years, while it is 20 years for those seeking a driving license for public transport or any public work related vehicle.

Provisional licenses will be offered to 17-year-olds and those would be valid for a duration of 1 year.

Regarding procedures for women driving in Saudi Arabia, GDT also mentioned that the females will be allowed to work on road security checkpoints as civilian personnel and in various security control positions.

Women would also be eligible for driving trucks and riding motorcycles if they meet the defined criterion.
