The recent speed limit reduction on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road from 120kmph to 110 kmph was done after a year-long study to ensure safety of motorists. This was revealed by Major General Mohammed Al Zafeen, Head of Federal Traffic Council and Assistant Commander in Chief of Dubai Police for Operations Affairs with a tweet.

“The reason behind reducing speed limits from 120kmph to 110kmph was to protect lives.”

Dubai Police will compare data of next 6 months with the one they collected between March to October 2017 to find the impact of the change in speed limits.

“If the result after the comparison is negative or equal on March 15, I promise to work with our brothers at RTA to revert the speed limits to what they were before,” he noted.

Talking about the sharing of gathered data, Al Zafeen said:

“Based on the 5-6 month long study, the success of the reduction will be determined based on accidents and deaths. I will share the results in a transparent manner.”
