The Volvo’s tuner Polestar is going to be transformed into a separate brand for high-performance electric cars. In June, Volvo talked about the future of Polestar and set October for an official announcement. Reports indicate Polestar will bring its first electric concept car in the near future.

The culmination of September also heralds the end of Volvo’s era for Polestar. Polestar announced this on their Instagram account with words ‘The End’. The post clearly marks the end of the direct relation between Polestar and Volvo that started almost two decades ago. Polestar actually emerged in the 1990s as the racing team “Flash Engineering”. The team went toe to toe with Volvo based cars in car events and was finally given its moniker “Polestar” in 2004 when Christian Dahl took the helm.

In 2010, Polestar, with Volvo’s support, launched a high-performance concept car based on the C30. The rationale behind this venture was to test the market’s readiness for sport based Volvos. It took three years to finalize the first “Polestar-tuned Volvo” in shape of the S60 Polestar and V60 Polestar.

Polestar is now about to embark on a new path to develop high-performance electric cars. It has a new commander in chief named Thomas Ingenlath at the reins who used to be the design boss for Volvo. Polestar will continue developing high-performance cars for Volvo, but all cars from their factories will bear Polestar logo now.
