With the rising number of vehicles in the city, the emirate of Abu Dhabi’s transport sector regulator has introduced Al Ain paid parking, which would initiate from today. Paid parking has been a regular affair in Abu Dhabi since 2009, but it is only recently that the government found the misuse of limited parking spots.

The Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport’s Integrated Transport Center designated 121 parking areas in the city center where people can park their vehicles after paying through parking meters. Right now, people can avail 1,376 parking spaces in Al Qasedah, 1,175 in Al Rebenah, 1,107 in Al Nawas, 1,166 in Al Hamirah and 867 in Al Salamah.

“The Mawaqif paid parking scheme will help the persistent shortage of parking in some of Al Ain’s most congested areas. [Its implementation] will also help stop the misuse of limited parking spots,” said Mohammad Al Muhairi, deputy general manager at the Center.

The residents can apply for an Al Ain paid parking permit by presenting a passport copy with a valid residency visa, tenancy contract, last utility bill and proof of vehicle ownership. Only two parking permits are allowed to every emigrant family, costing Dh800 and Dh1,200 for the first and the second vehicle respectively.

Recently, Sharjah also offered new paid parking zones.
