The automaker will offer only three types of vehicles, including Pure-Electric, Plug-in Hybrids and Mild Hybrids, which involve petrol engine paired with a large battery.
Currently, Volvo Cars has a few twin-engine models in its lineup namely XC90 and S90 T8 Twin Engine variant. The first pure-electric vehicle by Volvo is expected to debut in 2019, which will be built in China. It is reported to have a 250 miles range and will be priced between $35,000 and $40,000. Two more Volvo Electric cars will join the lineup between 2019 and 2021.
Information regarding mild hybrid models is scarce for now, but we do know they will be equipped with a 48-volt electrical system along with an electric motor. Audi and Mercedes will also be adopting the same technology in their future lineup.
The pure-electric vehicle market is tiny right now, but it is definitely growing at a fast rate. According to EV-Volumes.com, there was a 40 percent increase in the sales of plug-in vehicles from January to March this year. Volvo Cars intends to sell one million electric vehicles by 2025.
