Renault-Nissan reported this Wednesday to have sold over 9.96 million vehicles in 2016. This also includes electric vehicles sales. Renault-Nissan sales saw a 17% increase, which accounts for around 1 in 9 cars sold worldwide in 2016.

The company hopes to catch up on Volkswagen and Toyota motors to become the 3rd biggest car manufacturer leaving behind General Motors.

However, Mitsubishi’s sales remained unimpressive throughout the year due to its emission scandal. The brand only sold 934,013 units, which accounts for 13% drop in the overall sales.   Nissan bought 34% shares of Mitsubishi in fall 2016, so is the major stakeholder.

Nissan might have to face more challenges this year as we have come to know that Paris attorneys has initiated an emission cheating probe for Renault. Thierry Koskas (Commercial Director, Renault) said the company looks to resolve any issues as soon as possible.

However, Renault sales were saved by the increased demand in China and the USA markets resulting in 2.5% increase in sales. Renault also availed sales opportunities in Europe, India and Iran markets, which resulted in 13% growth.
