Under the directives of Dubai Municipality, annual Car-Free Day marked its 8th chapter on February 5. Top officials were noticed riding on metro followed by tens of thousands of residents who abandoned their cars and joined them in an effort to promote a carbon-free, unpolluted environment. Employees from 2,500 organizations including 200 major government firms and private companies traveled through public transport.
Hussain Nasser Lootah (Director General of Dubai Municipality) led a group of government officials and traveled on metro from Etisalat Station to Union Station. He also announced earlier that this annual event will be linked with the Year of Giving Initiative for the cause of making donations to charity organizations and tree plantation.
Accompanied by his team, he later joined hundreds of municipal employees and Dubai locals at a stupendous exhibition in Union Metro Park for the day’s celebration. Lootah explained the theme of the cause i.e ‘Not a Day but Everyday’. This day changed the attitude of citizens toward environment.
Initiated in 2010, Car-Free Day is celebrated each year. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) also participated by switching to public transit. Majority of citizens took the metro, while a few went for buses and carpooling. Some people used cycles to mark their participation in the annual drive.
