The eighth annual Dubai Car Free Day will be held on February 5, as announced by Dubai Municipality on Sunday. The one-day program aims to keep the cars off the road to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The municipality will make donations equal to the amount of emissions reduced.

Every car that burns 15 gallons of fuel daily emits 140 kg CO2 contributing a great deal toward global warming. Conforming to the UAE Vision 2021, this initiative was driven in 2010 to curb this grave problem. The event promotes the residents and government officials of Dubai to use eco-friendly automobiles and public transport for a day. Approximately, 1,500 government and private organizations are expected to join the campaign this year, which would exceed the participation of 1,070 organizations in 2016.

Past records of Dubai Car Free Day reveal the estimated saving of 140 tons of carbon dioxide emission and 147,000 liters of fuel. Hussain Nasser Lootah (Director General of Dubai Municipality) confirms the participation of 580 organizations so far. He also encourages the car companies to have their own Car Free Day, so it could be held more than once in a year. The awareness is created to motivate people to participate willingly for this cause.

To verify their contribution, the participants have to submit their details in the Car Free Day section on Dubai Municipality’s website.
