In the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show, Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn made a speech depicting Nissan’s plans toward semi-autonomous and all-electric cars production. He outlined 5 key steps Nissan requires to achieve its goals. The announcements he made were as follows:

  • Nissan is working to develop “Seamless Autonomous Mobility (SAM)” technology in affiliation with NASA. This technology would help self-driving cars learn the ways of human drivers and use that knowledge to make decision in uncertain situations.
  • Nissan will launch a self-driving car project for commercial services in Japan by 2020. This project would be possible by the efforts of Renault and DeNA (Japanese Internet Company).
  • Nissan’s next generation Leaf would employ ProPILOT technology which would enable it to go full autonomous in single-lane highway conditions.
  • Making use of Microsoft’s digital assistant Cortana, all Nissan autonomous cars would be connected to each other.
  • A global non-profit company, 100 Resilient Cities has also made alliance with Nissan welcoming semi-autonomous and all-electric cars.

Carlos gives an open invitation to tech partners, car-hailing and car- sharing platforms and various electronic commerce firms to join them in testing and launching semi-autonomous and full autonomous vehicles to make them as safe and convenient as possible.
