Audi has discontinued its all-electric supercar the R8 e-tron, which made its debut last year, at the Geneva Motor Show, as the electric variant of the highly successful R8.
The R8 e-tron was only available in Europe with a massive price tag of €1 million ($1.1 million). It has a range of more than 450km / 279 miles. The 92kWh system produces a torque output of 339 pound-feet. The R8 e-tron has an impressive acceleration, as it can hit 100kmh in under 4 seconds and has a top speed of 209 kilometer per hour.
Like many other short lived cars, the R8 e-tron was discontinued due to poor sales. Audi made halfhearted efforts to advertise and market the R8 e-tron. It was not available for online-order either, which resulted in a low transaction volume. Audi reportedly produced fewer than 100 units before its demise.
Although, with R8 e-tron’s demise the electric-car market has one less beauty, none of that research, development and effort is likely to go to waste. Volkswagen Group that owns Audi has big ambitions for electric vehicles, so it is probable that we might see some all-electric performance cars with Audi’s label on them, over the next decade.
