The Lexus LBX and Toyota Yaris Cross, which it’s based on, aren’t available in the UAE, but that’s not necessarily a loss given the crowded crossover market. However, the introduction of the LBX Morizo RR with the GR Corolla’s engine adds a compelling twist. Initially showcased as a one-off at the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon, this performance crossover is now on sale in Japan, featuring the G16E-GTS powertrain from the GR Yaris. It boasts a 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine pumping out 300 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, aligning it with top-tier hot hatches.
Like the 2024 GR Yaris, it offers both a six-speed manual and an eight-speed automatic transmission option. While the latter isn’t yet available in the GR Corolla, indications suggest it might arrive soon, as hinted by a Canadian order sheet on the GR Corolla Forum. Lexus claims a 0-62 mph time of 5.2 seconds, though they haven’t specified which transmission achieves this. In recent tests, the GR Yaris showed similar 0-60 mph performance with both gearbox options.
The LBX Morizo RR is exclusively an all-wheel-drive, riding on 19-inch forged wheels with 235/45 R19 tires, weighing 3,175 pounds with the manual version. Opting for the automatic adds a 66-pound penalty. Notably, this sporty variant is 0.6 inches wider and sits 0.4 inches lower than the regular hybrid LBX.
Measuring 165 inches in length and 72.4 inches in width, it slots neatly between the GR Yaris and GR Corolla. Upgrades include enhanced brakes to match the increased power, a slightly more aggressive body kit, and a dual exhaust to distinguish it from the standard LBX. Inside, the LBX Morizo RR features supportive front seats and a manual gearbox.
Priced at 6,500,000 yen ($41,600), regardless of transmission choice, Lexus also offers a “Bespoke Build” version with more customization options for 7,200,000 yen ($46,000). Limited to just 100 units, this special edition is available through a lottery system, with deliveries in Japan scheduled to start in late August.
The LBX marks the debut of this potent three-cylinder engine in a non-Toyota model. Lexus hopes it will eventually find its way into a lighter sports car than the hatchbacks or this crossover.
