Cars.com has released its latest American-Made index, highlighting Honda’s strong presence in the top 10. Tesla maintains the lead with the Model Y as the most American-made vehicle. Honda follows closely with the Passport, while the Ridgeline stands out as the highest-ranked American-made pickup truck at number six overall. This might surprise some pickup enthusiasts, especially considering the dominance of Detroit-based manufacturers like Ford and Chevrolet in the segment.
What does “made in the USA” signify here? It’s more than just the manufacturing site or headquarters. According to Cars.com, their American-Made index considers parts origin, engine and transmission origin, assembly location, and US workforce participation. Honda manufactures the Ridgeline at its Lincoln, Alabama facility, where the Pilot, Passport, and Odyssey are also produced, all ranking in the top 20 for American-made vehicles. Additionally, the facility produces the engine for the Ridgeline.
Among Detroit-based firms, Jeep shines with the Gladiator, ranking highest. This midsize truck, inspired by the Wrangler, sits just below the Ridgeline in eighth place. The Ram Classic comes in at 19th, while the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon take 23rd and 24th respectively. The latest Ram 1500 is positioned at 43rd.
To locate America’s top-selling trucks, you must look further down the list. The Ford F-150 ranks 58th, surprisingly just below its electric version, the F-150 Lightning. The Chevrolet Silverado barely makes it at 89th, just ahead of the GMC Sierra at 90th. This is still an improvement over the Ford Maverick and Ranger, as neither made the list.
Cars.com evaluates 401 vehicles but only lists the top 100, so being listed means you’re in the top 25 percent. However, it’s notable that only one model from a traditional Detroit-based company appears among the 10 most American-made vehicles, whether pickup trucks or not.
