During the debut event of Rivian’s latest model, the R2 SUV, the emerging car manufacturer pleasantly surprised attendees by unveiling a more compact and economical crossover, the R3. Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe expressed enthusiasm, stating, “We’re thrilled about the advancements beyond the R2… It encapsulates R2’s essence and framework but in a condensed form, embodying our interpretation of a crossover.”
While the R2 is marginally smaller than Rivian’s initial SUV, the R1S, the R3 further reduces dimensions. Scaringe revealed that the R3 boasts a wheelbase five inches shorter than the R2. Both models share the same platform, and the compact SUV will offer single, dual, and tri-motor powertrain options.
The R3 resembles more of an elevated hatchback compared to the R2, featuring lift-up rear glass, a front trunk, and two gloveboxes. Also in the pipeline is a sportier variant dubbed the R3X, boasting a tri-motor drivetrain, larger wheels, and slightly heightened ground clearance.
While specifics on the R3 remain sparse, Rivian hinted at a price point below the anticipated $45,000 for the R2. With R2 deliveries slated to kick off in the initial half of 2026, anticipation mounts for the arrival of the R3.
