Tesla autopilot system has been targeted by the rival company Volvo, as the Swedish automaker’s senior technical leader of crash avoidance, Trent Victor termed the technology as “an unsupervised wannabe.”

Talking to ‘The Verge’, Trent Victor pointed out that Tesla’s autopilot technology gives the driver a false impression of doing more than it actually can. According to the electric automaker, Tesla autopilot system is level 2 autonomous. On the highways, the driver can take their hands off the steering wheel and the vehicle will drive itself. However, the driver is supposed to stay alert in case of any unexpected event. Volvo, on the other hand, believes that it is unreasonable to expect the driver to stay focused during autonomous driving as they would be busy in other activities.

Volvo will launch its ‘Drive Me autonomous car’ next year which will be a level 4 autonomous vehicle and it will not only drive itself, but will also be capable of handling unexpected developments.
