The new Volkswagen turbocharged engine, dubbed as the EA211 TSI EVO has been unveiled by the automaker at this year’s 37th International Vienna Motor Symposium. This is a new 1.5L turbo-charged unit that incorporates variable turbine geometry (VTG).
So how this new Volkswagen turbocharged engine works? The VTG technology changes the alignment of the turbocharger’s compressor blades according to the speed of the vehicle. When the engine’s speed is high, the compressor blades change orientation so as to create less surface area, resulting in a reduced back pressure. At low speed, more surface area is provided for a quick boost.
The engine is capable of producing up to 148 horsepower and 200 Nm of torque. Moreover, it is 10 percent more efficient compared to existing VW engines.
The VTG engine technology is already available in Porsche, however Volkswagen will start installing this new powertrain in its vehicles by late 2016.
