Tesla will soon be facing tough competition from Mercedes-Benz as the German auto giant is ready to produce an all-electric sedan to beat Tesla Model S, confirmed by development chief Thomas Weber.

The German auto manufacturer is hardly a newcomer in the electric vehicles market, having launched its first all-electric vehicle in 1906. Its popular B Class Electric Drive was launched in 2005, the latest model of which boasts a 132 kW strong electric motor, enabling it to accelerate from 0-100 in 7.9 seconds. Besides, with Mercedes SLS AMG Electric Drive already winning hearts, we can expect the unnamed electric car better than any previous offerings.

The upcoming electric car might have around 300 miles range on a single charge, which is definitely impressive. This, along with the fact that the company’s name is practically synonymous with “luxury”, will give competitors a run for their money. With the Model X rolling out of the assembly line on Sep 29, Tesla has reason to be concerned and may not hit the sales figures predicted by Elon Musk.

Interestingly, Mercedes had 9.1 percent shares in Tesla in 2009, and the B Class electric cars were built on Tesla batteries until 2014. This is not the first time the two companies have gone head to head with innovations. In June this year, Mercedes entered the home and commercial battery market in direct competition with Tesla. The German conglomerate Daimler owns two subsidiaries dedicated to manufacturing batteries, which are being market under the Mercedes-Benz brand umbrella.
