The long awaited Tesla Model X crossover will start shipping by the end of this month with a starting price tag of $132,000 (90-kWh battery, 240 miles range).

The number one US electric car manufacturer unveiled the prototype of Model X in its design studios in LA on February 9, 2012. Production was scheduled to start by the end of 2013, but numerous delays were faced by anticipating customers as the company struggled to meet production demands for the Model S plus there were some design issues with the Tesla Model X.

It is confirmed now that deliveries will begin from September 29 for the Model X Signature series for customers who already have bookings. The delivery estimate for new orders is early 2016, but the company has yet to confirm if they will be able to stick to the production schedule.

The Model X boasts two independent, digitally controlled motors and Falcon Wing rear doors, which were confirmed by Elon Musk as being responsible for much of the delay caused in the production. Musk was insistent that the company would not roll out the Tesla Model X unless they could deliver the product in bulk. He also stated in a letter to his investors that he did not want to “bring a product to market that does not delight customers”.

Tesla Chief, Elon Musk, is confident for the success of the Model X and expects the one of a kind Crossover to double Tesla’s annual sales.
