Toyota is finally prepared to introduce the hybrid version of its RAV4. The company has released a teaser image showing the back end of the hybrid compact crossover, which will be formally unveiled at the New York auto show.
Rumors surrounding the project have circulated for years, and a Toyota executive even hinted that the company was gauging demand at least as far back as 2012 when the current generation was introduced.
Additional details are unclear, though the previous reports hint at a powertrain borrowed from the Camry Hybrid. If true, the crossover will be pair a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, good for a combined output of 200 horsepower.
The standard RAV4 has been a strong seller so far in 2015, helping drive overall sales gains for the company. An electrified version is already available as the RAV4 EV, however its $49,800 price tag has discouraged wide adoption. The hybrid package will presumably fetch a modest premium over the base model, but it will likely keep a margin of $20,000 or more below the all-electric variant.
