In an attempt to make amends for lax in services to the public, Uber, a transport service provider, in association with UN has declared to provide 1 million jobs for women around the globe by the year 2020. Unsurprisingly, this move comes at the same time as the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women which clearly states UN’s aim to bring about equality, development and peace for all women worldwide.
In the past, Uber faced a lot of criticism owing to the lack of safety provided by the service to women, as a result of which several Uber drivers have been accused of abusing and kidnapping women.
Moreover, currently the male to female ratio of Uber drivers according to Reuters is 86:14 out of the 162,000 Uber drivers in US only. Considering the low number of female drivers, Uber will need to make an extra effort to reach its goal of empowering women by providing 1 million jobs globally within a span of five years.
