We know how worrying the thought of getting a ticket for your non-working brake light can be, but bear with us when we say that before you go running off to your mechanic you should read the tips below and save yourself some money.

The first thing to do is figure out what is the issue, so know the probable causes and their simple fixes below.

Is it the Fuse?

Check the fuse first, as a blown fuse usually causes both lights to stop functioning. Oh, you don’t know where the fuse box is? Do not worry; check your car’s owner manual. It is usually located under the dashboard. As you have found it, check the manual to determine which fuse is the brake light fuse. Make sure the car is not turned on and then take off the fuse box cover to inspect the fuse. If the piece of metal inside it is broken, you have to replace it; remove and take it to a car parts shop to find a replacement and insert it back in the fuse box.

Wiring?

Considering the fuse is fine, look at the brake light wiring. Open the trunk of the car and inspect it to see if a wire has come loose. If yes, simply reattach it to get the lights working again.

Brake light bulb?

If the wires aren’t the issue, checking the brake light bulbs is the next step to do. Unscrew the brake light lenses from either inside the trunk or outside depending on your car make and model. Subsequently, simply unscrew the bulbs and inspect them the way you do a normal household bulb for a broken filament. A replacement bulb can be easily bought from an auto spare parts shop; better to take the bulb with you when you shop to find the correct replacement.

Tail light lenses?

Examine the lenses to see if they are cracked or broken, because when water enters, it can cause a blown fuse. To repair this issue, you will need to buy and use a lens repair kit. First remove the brake light bulbs then clean and dry the tail light. Now use the tape you received with your kit, apply it to the affected area and smooth out any air bubbles, so the lens doesn’t get distorted. The tape will make the whole lens waterproof again.

Conclusion

Next time your car’s brake light starts acting up, perform the above mentioned actions before heading to the mechanic; doing that will not only save you money but time as well.
