The race between Apple and Google to enrich car driving experience through infotainment touch screens has gained heat as each giant is working hard to make its way into the cabins of maximum auto brands.
Dubbed as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the two systems are especially designed to enhance your car’s infotainment features while offering maximum on-road safety by accessing your mobile phone and using it to play songs, get directions and even to access the internet.
While the war between the two giants appears to be at its peak around this time, the functions that each of the system performs are basically the same. Be it Apple or Google, they use your mobile device as their software and then allow you to access various apps through the car’s touch screen.
With CarPlay and Android Auto, Apple and Google have saved years of gruesome hard work to successfully plant their software into automobiles. The two systems are in fact a shortcut to providing quick entertainment to drivers by using car’s hardware (the touch screen) and a mobile phone’s software (iOS or Android). You simply plug in your phone, and the big touch screen in front of you instantly converts into an entertainment device; giving you an easier access to all applications on your device.
While connectivity is simple, both systems have their own mechanisms to provide you the entertainment. Apple’s CarPlay requires your device to be plugged into the car using a Cable, whereas Google’s Android Auto needs MicroUSB for the same job.
The other difference between the two systems is that while CarPlay will require you to ask Siri for directions and for dictating messages, Android Auto uses Google’s voice search.
However, there still may be some problems with these systems which will be evident only when they are introduced by the end of this year. Mobile compatibility with the car’s hardware is one such area that may create hurdles for some drivers who wish to benefit from the new feature.
While it is still being worked on, we are providing the latest list of vehicles which will have both or either of the new systems for your convenience.
