A temporary speed reduction has been imposed on the capital’s Al Shahama main road — the E10.Radars along a stretch of the road will be set at 121kph, down from 141kph from Tuesday as roadwork is carried out to expand the route.
The work has led to the number of lanes being reduced from four to three for the duration of the construction.
The restrictions apply from Al Shahama to Sheikh Zayed Bridge, in both directions.
The limit will be re-addressed once the roadwork is completed, but it is not yet clear how long that may take.
Khalid Al Suwaidi, surface transport adviser and acting general director at the Department of Transport, said that the decision was taken “after conducting a detailed technical study using a comprehensive approach that aims to provide solutions to such cases”.
The department urged all motorists to abide by the speed limit or face fines.
The Safety and Traffic Solutions Committee in Abu Dhabi said the limits are in place for the protection of drivers and to reduce the number of accidents across the emirate.
