Mercedes Benz is attempting to expand its lineup of larger vehicles with more models that appeal to buyers who like the taller build of SUVs but with a preference for car lines and no need for true off-road capabilities.

“The Concept Coupe SUV previews a four-door, coupe-styled model that will appeal to customers who want a sportily designed vehicle with a high seating position,” Mercedes-Benz R&D head Thomas Weber told Automotive News.

The executive hinted that the company is also considering a similar variant of the GLA, restyling the compact SUV with the lines of a coupe.

The comments suggest Mercedes-Benz is attempting to catch up with BMW in the niche. The Bavarian rival five years ago introduced its X6 “sports activity coupe,” a controversial design at the time, and followed up with the smaller X4 for the 2015 model year.

Mercedes-Benz’ Crossover Coupe is expected to begin production next year before arriving on the market as the MLC.
