At a cursory glance, the uninitiated observer may be inclined to dismiss this as yet another mundane Ford Puma ST, however, upon closer inspection, it becomes evident that this particular variant deviates significantly from the hot crossover model that has been in circulation since 2020.

2023 Ford Puma ST Preview

Powertrain

In an effort to expand the lineup and cater to a wider audience, Ford has introduced a milder version of the Puma ST, outfitted with a smaller yet still capable 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine. This mild-hybrid three-pot powerplant is capable of generating an impressive 168 horsepower and a noteworthy 183 pound-feet (248 Newton-meters) of torque, a formidable feat indeed. As a point of comparison, the more powerful 1.5-liter iteration boasts an impressive 197 hp and 236 lb-ft (320 Nm) of torque, a fact that should not be overlooked.

Performance

A striking dissimilarity between these two models is the manner in which power is distributed to the front wheels. The more robust and sturdy Puma ST employs a six-speed manual gearbox, in contrast to the new, entry-level variant, which is equipped with a Powershift transmission featuring paddle shifters. This particular system is a dual-clutch, seven-speed automatic unit, endowing the zesty subcompact crossover with the ability to reach 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standstill in a brisk 7.4 seconds. Although this may seem like an impressive feat, it must be noted that this is 0.7 seconds slower than its more muscular 1.5-liter counterpart.

With the added advantage of Ford’s most potent iteration of the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine, the new automatic Puma ST is also endowed with mild-hybrid technology that is instrumental in curbing fuel consumption, achieving a commendable rate of 6.3 liters per 100 kilometers. This impressive feat is primarily attributed to the 48V setup, which effectively reduces CO2 emissions to a mere 144 g/km, a noteworthy accomplishment indeed. Peak horsepower is attained at the exalted rpm of 5,750, while the full torque is unleashed with an optimal effect at 3,000 rpm, yielding a thrilling driving experience that is sure to leave you breathless. The more muscular version is not the only one to boast of active exhaust valve technology; the new entrant also features this innovative technology that dynamically adjusts the auditory feedback depending on the driving mode, heightening the driving experience to new heights of euphoria.

Exterior

As part of the newly introduced Powershift model, Ford has incorporated a novel ST-exclusive Azure Blue paint finish, which is further accentuated by the optional glossy black roof, resulting in a dynamic and visually striking appearance. With six distinctive exterior paint options to choose from, the possibilities for customization are endless, allowing you to personalize your spicy crossover to your heart’s content. The standard black side mirror caps, grille surround, and roof spoiler complement the vehicle’s aesthetic appeal, adding an air of understated sophistication to its design. To further augment the appearance, the 19-inch wheels are available with a Magnetite finish, lending a polished, refined look to the overall appearance of the vehicle.

Interior

As you venture inside the Puma ST Powershift, you are greeted with Ford Performance-branded sporty front seats, exquisitely wrapped in synthetic leather, that provide an unparalleled degree of comfort, complementing the vehicle’s high-performance capabilities. The heated windshield adds an extra layer of convenience, allowing for optimal visibility in colder weather conditions, while the wireless charging pad keeps your devices juiced up on the go. With front and back parking sensors, mechanical wipers, and various driver assistance tech, comprising Adaptive Cruise Control, you can relish the drive with unparalleled safety and convenience as you navigate the challenging roads ahead. It is regrettable, however, that the vehicle is still furnished with the old SYNC3 infotainment system, a relic of a bygone era. Nevertheless, the vehicle comes equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, allowing you to enjoy seamless integration with your digital life.

Despite the strong desire of Ford CEO Jim Farley to introduce the Puma ST to the North American and Gulf market, regrettably, it still remains elusive, as of now, leaving car enthusiasts pining for the vehicle’s exhilarating driving experience.
