It is true that the demand for sedans and wagons is declining around the world. Buyers now prefer crossovers over these conventional body styles and it is also damaging minivan sales. So, what are the options for the automakers?

They need to think out of the box and bring something that is a cross between SUVs and hatchbacks. Citroën did exactly that as they introduced C4 X, which they call a “unique alternative” to hatchbacks and utility vehicles.

Basically, the Citroën C4 X is a rebadged version of the new Peugeot 408 that hit the showrooms in early June. Its length is 4,600 millimeters (181.1 inches), thus it takes a place between C4 and C5 X, considering the full length. However, its wheelbase of 2,670 mm (105.1 in) equals the C4, whereas the width is 1,800 mm (70.8 in) and height is 1,525 mm (60 mm).

These measurements make it a bit smaller and taller than the Peugeot 408. The lower footprint means it offers less cargo room of 510 litres (18 cubic feet) than the Peugeot’s 536 litres (almost 19 cubic feet). On the other hand, the swoopy styling renders it a fairly low drag coefficient of 0.29, which would make it more efficient on the road.

The Citroën C4 X will be sold in big European markets like Germany, France, Italy, and Spain, Citroën on stilts solely featuring an electric powertrain. The ë-C4 X employs a 50-kWh battery pack creating 224 miles (360 kilometers) on the WLTP cycle. The automaker says the owners can juice up to 80 per cent in only 30 minutes through a 100 kW DC charger.

The Citroën C4 X will use just one motor capable of generating 136 horsepower (100 kilowatts) and 260 Newton-meters (191 pound-feet) of torque. It is not as fast as you would imagine from an electric car. The run from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) will take 9.7 seconds while the top speed is 93 mph (150 km/h), in Sport mode.

The double chevron will also develop the C4 X with petrol and diesel powertrains for global markets. All models will be created in Spain at Stellantis’ plant in Madrid.
