Subaru has been playing safe with the Ascent’s design for a long time. It is why they didn’t change it much or made it aggressive over the years. The family hauler, however, received some updates for the 2023 model year that give it a little edgier appearance.
Exterior
Do not get us wrong; the 2023 Subaru Ascent isn’t completely different from the previous model. We see a new grille, updated more angular LED headlights, and a more noticeable front bumper, featuring new lower-edge air ducts. The press release says they are added to enhance the vehicle’s aerodynamics. At the back, the alterations are minor, emphasized by distinct C-shaped taillights – much like
those available on the Forester.
Interior
The interior gives us a much newer feel thanks to the bigger 11.6-inch infotainment screen. It is a tablet-type display, which is standard on all trim levels, swapping the previously accessible 6.5-inch and 8.0-inch setups. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are part of the package.
The bigger display gives a much brighter view of the SUV’s surroundings, courtesy of four cameras that are part of the optional Surround View Monitors. The 360-degree view of the Ascent improved a great deal.
Another great addition to the 2023 Ascent is the Cabin Connect System. The system works to connect the front passengers to the ones at the back in the third row. The front occupants can make use of a microphone that transmits their voice to those at the rear via the vehicle speakers. However, this feature is accessible for those who add the Harman Kardon sound system.
Safety
Subaru has also equipped the new Ascent with the latest EyeSight driver assist technology. The suite was first introduced in the 2023 Outback, boasting a broader field of view, upgraded control software, and a new electric brake booster. The safety suite also adds a new Wide-Angle Mono Camera that functions in combination with EyeSight’s two cameras.
The automatic emergency steering available on trim levels features blind-spot detection with lane change assist and rear cross-traffic alert. The safety tech assists in maneuvering the SUV to prevent a crash, and works at speeds under 50 miles per hour (80 kilometers per hour).
Onyx Edition
Off-road SUV fans might feel disappointed for not having the Wilderness Edition, but the Japanese automaker improves the Onyx Edition. The special edition features distinct black exterior trim, 20-inch wheels, and of course its own unique badging. The interior boasts Subaru StarTex® water-repellant material and opposing green stitching. The panoramic power moonroof is typical for the Onyx, which is available only in high-level trims.
While most of the features in Onyx just enhance its appearance, the dual-function X-MODE® definitely assists in driving on snow and mud.
Trim Levels and Availability
Subaru offers the 2023 Ascent in Base, Premium, Onyx Edition, Limited, and Touring variants. The SUV will hit the dealerships this fall. The pricing details aren’t available yet. Also, Subaru did not mention any new powertrain for the 2023 Ascent, so we expect the current mill will carry over.
