Buick plans to regain Electra name for possibly an electric vehicle as it applied with the United States Trademark and Patent Office on December 20, 2021. It has been over three decades since Buick isn’t using this name; however, the automaker showcased an electric concept SUV at the 2020 Beijing Auto Show by the name ‘Electra.’
We believe the company will use this name for its upcoming electric vehicle and it will employ GM’s new EV hardware, Ultium. It means the Buick Electra will have the liberty to borrow battery packs, electric motors and platforms from GM EVs like Cadillac Lyriq.
However, we suspect GM will completely exchange the Lyriq crest with the Electra. If we consider the Electra concept from Shanghai, the new Buick EV should have its own sheet metal. Of course, we may not see the scissor-hinged doors but the coupe-like design will find its way to the production vehicle.
It is still not clear if Buick will use the Electra name to materialise the concept they offered a year ago or they would pin the name for any other vehicle. It could probably be an ICE vehicle or the name could be filed for any other reason.
That said, trademarking a name that was used for a concept is a strong hint for a production vehicle.
