First introduced in 1999, the Kia Carens is entering its fourth generation with a new design philosophy ditching its minivan moniker. The automaker launched it yesterday in India as a “Recreational Vehicle,” deriving design hints from crossovers. It is ideal for buyers who love to have the additional practicality of a minivan and the design features of a utility vehicle. It is the reason the 2022 Kia Carens is underpinned on the platform we find in the Seltos.

Seeing the images if you feel the headlights and taillights are similar to the new Sportage, you are not alone. The solid plastic cladding around wheel arches signifies the fresh outdoorsy image of the vehicle. The RV has a nearly horizontal roofline to boost headroom and there is plenty of space inside to accommodate six or seven seats. With six seats, you can have captain’s chairs.

Speaking of spaciousness, it is 4540 millimetres (178.7 inches) long, 1800 mm (71 in) wide, and 1700 mm (67 in) tall. Having a wheelbase of 2780 mm (109.4 in), it is the most stretched vehicle in its class. With this wheelbase, it is a litter larger than the model it is replacing in terms of the overall length. However, the distance between axles has been significantly enhanced to deliver a more spacious cabin.

The automaker did not only completely revamp the exterior, but it also fully changed the interior. The cabin is more upscale compared to its predecessor, taking inspiration from other models in the automaker’s lineup. We are talking about a 10.25-inch infotainment system, distinct controls for the climate settings, and more.

Other new features that make the RV highly desirable are 64-colour LED ambient lighting, an air purifier, ventilated front seats, over-the-air updates, an eight-speaker Bose sound system, a sunroof, and selectable drive modes. Not to forget a long list of standard safety features like Hill-Assist Control, Brake Assist System, Downhill Brake Control, and a lot more. Those ready to dole out a little extra can have front parking sensors and automatic windscreen wipers.

Propelling the 2022 Kia Carens is a standard naturally aspirated 1.5-litre gasoline mill good for 115 horsepower and 144 Newton-meters (106 pound-feet) of torque. Those seeking more power can opt for the turbocharged 1.4-litre pumping out 140 hp and 242 Nm (179 lb-ft). Diesel lovers can have a 1.5-litre mill producing 115 hp and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft).

The standard engine mates to a six-speed manual, while a seven-speed, dual-clutch auto is optional for the turbo. The diesel uses a six-speed torque-converter auto.

The 2022 Kia Carens will hit the Indian and other select markets in the first quarter of next year.
