The world’s fourth-biggest automaker Stellantis is progressing fast in Europe, selling more cars than any other car manufacturer in the Old Continent. With 14 marquees under its supervision, Stellantis will be a tough kid to beat in the coming time. To spice up things in Europe, the company’s sub-brand Opel has introduced the 2022 Astra Sports Tourer. The estate wagon is essentially an elongated version of the Astra hatchback.
While stretching the wheelbase, Opel made sure the overall design remains the same as the hatchback. The long roof features the sharp looks of the hatchback while stretching the rear overhang to boost the boot space, which is huge. The automaker says it can accommodate 608 litres (21.5 cubic feet) of luggage with the back seats intact. Fold them flat and the luggage capacity increases to a whopping 1,634 litres (57.7 cu ft). Naturally, the Peugeot 308 wagon, it is based on, boasts the precise same capacity.
Of note, the plug-in hybrid Sports Tourer offers lower cargo capacity owing to the batteries fixed in the underbody. The PHEV reduces the boot space to 548 or 1,574 litres (19.3 to 55.5 cu ft) with seats up or folded down, correspondingly. The 40:20:40 configuration is standard across the range.
The petrol powertrain gives you the liberty to have an adjustable floor with two heights. The estate wagon features an electric tailgate, which you can open by flaring your foot under the rear bumper. Furthermore, the 2022 Opel Astra Sports Tourer has a retractable load compartment cover for additional concealment. Drivers can store it beneath the floor.
Besides the changes in the boot space, the Opel Sports Tourer is completely a carbon copy of its hatchback model. You can find the matrix LED headlights, a head-up display, a completely digital instrument cluster, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and so much more in the estate wagon.
Similar to its exterior and interior design, the powertrains are also the same as the hatchback. The base model comes with a turbocharged, three-cylinder 1.2-litre petrol engine generating 110 horsepower and 205 Newton-meters (151 pound-feet) of torque. It is available in two states of tune. The second one is more powerful with 130 ponies and 230 Nm (170 lb-ft) on tap. Diesel fans can have a four-cylinder, 1.5-litre turbodiesel good for 130 hp and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) of torque.
Those looking for an extra punch and better fuel economy would be happy to opt for the PHEV model. It boasts an electrified 1.6-litre turbo powertrain churning out 180 hp and 360 Nm (266 lb-ft). The PHEV will be accessible at the start and later on will get a more powerful unit with 225 hp on tap. The standard transmission is a six-speed manual while the upper-spec models will get an eight-speed automatic.
We heard that Peugeot has plans to fully electrify the 308 models and if it happens, the Astra electric will be a reality, as well.
