The Renault-owned French marquee Alpine will transform into a fully electric brand later this decade. However, before the company ditches the Internal Combustion Engines, they bring us an improved version of the Alpine A110 sports car to rival the likes of Porsche Cayman.
The changes for the 2022 Alpine A110 start from its nomenclature for trim levels. The standard A110 Pure is known simply as A110 now, while the mid-level Legende gets GT suffix. The range-topper A110 S doesn’t change its name, but its Renault Megane RS-sourced turbocharged 1.8-litre gasoline engine has been tweaked to offer extra punch. The mill now churns out 300 horsepower and 340 Newton-meters (251 pound-feet) of torque – 12 horsepower and 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) more than the 2021 model.
All this power enables the Alpine 110 S to hit the 100 km/h (62 mph) mark in just 4.2 seconds on its way to a top speed of 275 km/h (171 mph). Alpine installed Brembo brakes with 320-mm discs at both axles, behind black 18-inch wheels. The front wheels sport Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires measuring 215/40 R18, while the rear ones have 245/40 R18 tires.
What makes the 2022 Alpine A110 S different from other variants are a tougher chassis and suspension for brisker handling as well as a sports exhaust system. Depending on the amenities, you order with the S, it weighs from 1,102 to 1,140 kilograms (2,429 to 2,513 pounds).
Speaking of the mid-range A110 GT, it also offers the same engine and performance as the range-topper but comes with extra equipment to match its GT class. For instance, you will find modifiable Comfort seats covered in leather, front and rear park assistant, and tweaked chassis and suspension for a softer ride.
Because of the extra goodies, it is a little heavier, tilting the scales at a minimum of 1,119 kg and bulking as heftier as 1,140 kg (2,467 to 2,513 lbs).
If you are happy to have the standard model, you have to make do with the four-cylinder engine creating 252 hp and 320 Nm (235 lb-ft), which is 48 hp and 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) fewer than the GT and S.
However, the 0 to 100 km/h sprint isn’t very sluggish at 4.5 seconds, which is just 0.3s slower than the GT and S. The base model comes with 17-inch wheels and weighs from 1,102 to 1,140 kilograms (2,429 to 2,513 pounds). The tires and the adjustable seats are the same as the more expensive variants, though.
Inside, the 2022 Alpine A110 receives updated infotainment with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. The system will be able to receive over-the-air updates to get Wi-Fi connectivity, afterwards.
Starting next month, the 2022 Alpine A110 will cost buyers at least €59,500. The A110 GT and S will retail at €69,500 and €71,500, respectively. For comparison sake, the base Porsche Cayman costs €59,692 in France while the Cayman S goes for €72,862, at least.
